(Good)Bye Plastics!

Dear readers, this time I will talk about environment issue in my country recently. Check this out :)

Feb 21st 2016 is the new chapter for Indonesia’s modern retailing business. Starting from this day as it launched by Indonesia Environment and Minister, consumers charged between IDR 200 until IDR 5.000 (US$ 0,37) for each plastic bag they used.

As it stated by Channel News Asia: “Indonesia is the world’s second-biggest user of plastic bags after China with around 9,8 billion plastic bags used in the country each year.

Trivia about plastic:

1. It takes 1.000 years for plastic waste to biodegrade in the soil.

2. The using of plastics worldwide, increase 9%.

3. The amount of plastic waste that had been disposed in a year could “orbit” the Earth four times.

4. 8% of oil production is used to make plastics.

5. 300 million tons of plastic are produced worldwide every year.

6. 10 billion plastic bags are used worldwide every week.

7. 1% of plastic bags are recycled at the present time.

8. 60% percent of marine waste consists of plastic material.

9. Plastic waste kills 100.000 mammals and 1 million seabirds in the ocean.

10. Water from a plastic bottle is 10.000 times more expensive than water from the faucet.

11. We can save 100 plastic bottles if every one person uses a reusable drinking bottle.

12. It takes 17 million barrels of oil to produce plastic bottles in a year. This is equal to the amount of petroleum used as fuel of 1 million cars.

No wonder several countries in the world do some various campaigns against plastic including here in Indonesia. But if we really have to use plastic, choose the environmental-friendly plastic just like these ones, okay :)

Pros:

People think this campaign really a great movement since it is friendly for the environment. Less plastic, less pollution, and save the Earth. Just like the spirit of “reduce, reuse, recycle”. People are demanded to be more creative to make something new (DIY Projects) from plastic wasted. Of course, the main goal of this campaign is to reduce the using of plastic itself. Let's hope the best or this campaign :)

Cons:

Some people think it is not an effective campaign, because it is not a simply way to bring our own shopping bag everytime you want to go shopping. How if, at first you did not planning to shop and just ending up doing it. And you did not bring your own shopping bag. That is what they are thinking.

Writer’s Opinion:

Well, I am more into pros than cons. Before this campaign being legalized by the government, there are some organizations that shared the same thought. That is why I am changed my habit even a little bit. Sometime I bring my own shopping bag or if it possible I will just put all the groceries to my bag (not a shopping bag – reusable one). So, I support this campaign! #payforplastic
